“We’re hard pressed to think of a better way to celebrate than with some quality Japanese food.

“Tokyo Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar is now open in a fixed-up Lehi Main Street location… The interior is full of dark, rich colors and smart lighting that all add to the atmosphere.

“The menu focuses on teppan-style cooking, in which a chef prepares your choice of meats and vegetables right before your eyes on a large steel grill. Chairs and a counter are arranged around the grill so you can eat your food as soon as it finishes cooking. The cooking itself is something of a show. The chef tosses an egg in the air, letting it land on the edge of his spatula to crack it. He lights some oil on fire a couple of times, and tosses shrimp pieces for you to catch in your mouth. Much more exciting than waiting for a plate of food to be delivered to your table.

“We opted for the Tokyo Special, a $55 ‘dinner for two’ that easily fed the four of us. The main course of filet mignon, chicken and shrimp plus a pile of vegetables comes with two appetizers and two bowls of ice cream, not to mention some miso soup. You’d be silly to attack such a wealth of food with only two mouths. The filet was wonderfully tender and our couple of dozen shrimp tasted great with Tokyo’s ginger sauce. The chicken is cubed and stir fried with a teriyaki sauce and sesame seeds. All the food right down to the appetizers was of a rare quality, proving at least in this case that you get what you pay for.”
